Could you make this game open source for me to edit? I was thinking of improving it for my own sake. I know how to actually make a save feature, and there's a few things I could do.

Well saying something is "badly made" is neither constructive or helpful. It just comes off as ill informed and rude
You definitely haven't made a game before, it isn't easy and given the limitations that Gameboy hardware has, he did a really good job.
It's hard to make a game, much less one on 30 - 40 year old hardware.
